This course focuses on the major historical developments and themes of one of the world’s major religious traditions, Christianity, in the period from roughly 1250-2000. More specifically, we will initially be concentrating on the evolution of Christianity in Western Europe during the Renaissance and Reformation (1350-1700). These three centuries were marked by the dramatic re-ordering of Christianity from a unified Christendom, to a pluralistic Christianity with various confessions. At the same time, this period marked the most dramatic expansion of Christianity since the time of the Roman Empire. Another major theme in this course will be Christian missions and expansion in the modern period especially as Christianity took root in the Americas and Asia. Finally, we will be looking at a few major developments in twentieth Christianity that represented radical departures from and transformations of these earlier developments.
