2016 Feldman Lecture: Celia Applegate (Vanderbilt), "Music and Work"

The history of music intertwines with the history of work in ways that reveal remarkable affinities between "homo faber" and "homo ludens," between the working man and the playing man. This lecture considers the broad outlines of these intertwined histories. It focuses especially on Germany in the half-century before the Great War, when the nature of music's relationship to work—and work to music—came to pre-occupy a variety of composers and scholars, workers and working musicians.
