Readings Papers Schedule

PAPERS

Three short papers of 6-8 pages are required, each to be focused on readings from the original sources as follows:

PAPER No. 1 (due on September 27):  "What M. de Tocqueville Saw:  The Situation of Ireland between Union and & Emancipation” (de Tocqueville).  6 pp.

PAPER No. 2 (due on November 1):  "The Romance and Reality of Gaelic Ireland” (Synge & Sayers OR O Crohan OR O’Sullivan). 12 pp.

PAPER No. 3 (due December 3):  "Revolutionary Ireland” (Ward & Clarke).  12 pp.

ALTERNATIVE PROJECT (due on December 3):  as an alternative to papers 2 & 3, students may choose (with instructor's consent) a topic for a research paper.  The last date for making this choice is Tuesday, October 11.

EXAMS:  There will be a map quiz on the provinces and counties of Ireland.  The final exam will concentrate on Ireland since 1921.

GRADES:  Grades will based on the three papers (25% each), and the final exam (25%).  If you do the long paper instead of papers 2 & 3, it will count for 50% of the final grade.  Scores on the map quiz will decide borderline final grades.
