Students will be expected to attend lectures, to do the reading, and to be actively engaged in the course. Lectures will be followed at periodic intervals by discussions, typically focusing on the reading. Note: active participation in the discussions can only enhance your final grade. There will be three (3) exams: (1) a quiz [15%); (2) a post-midterm exam (25%); and (4) a comprehensive final (35%). There will be one paper (25%): a research essay on a topic to be chosen in consultation with the Reader or me. Please remember to keep a copy of all exams and papers as a precaution. Observe: failure to complete any one (or more) of the four required writing assignments will result in a failing grade for the course. Only under extraordinary circumstances (with proper documentation) will late papers and make-up exams be permitted. Late papers in particular will adversely affect your grade. Except under the most extraordinary circumstances, incompletes are unacceptable. Remember: visit me
during office hours. This time is for your concerns and questions.
