Revered Historian Barbara Daly Metcalf to Give Keynote Address at Commencement

Professor Barbara Daly Metcalf,an esteemed scholar of South Asia who specializes on the Muslim populations of India and Pakistan, will give the keynote commencement address at the Department of History’s Graduation Ceremony on May 15. She was elected as president of both the American Historical Association and the Association for Asian Studies.

Professor Metcalf served on the faculties of the University of Pennsylvania, the University of California at Davis (where she was also Dean of the Division of Social Sciences), and the University of Michigan (where she held the Alice Freeman Palmer Chair in History). Professor Metcalf received her Ph.D. from UC Berkeley.

Her books include A Concise History of India, Islamic Contestations: Essays On Muslims In India And Pakistan, Islamic Revival in British India, Perfecting Women: Maulana Ashraf 'Ali Thanawi's Bihishti Zewar,and Husain Ahmad Madani: The Jihad for Islam and India’s Freedom.
