Vernon to Receive Distinguished Graduate Student Mentoring Award

Professor James Vernon has been selected as a recipient of the 2017 Carol D. Soc Distinguished Graduate Student Mentoring Award for Senior Faculty. He shares this year's honors with David Card, Class of 1950 Professor of Economics, and Scott Moura, Assistant Professor of Civil and Environmental Engineering.

Nominated by faculty colleagues and current and former graduate students, the award recipients have demonstrated an outstanding commitment to helping UC Berkeley graduate students to succeed academically, professionally, and personally. These distinguished individuals were selected from a pool of exceptional faculty members on the Berkeley campus.

Vernon's award comes with a financial prize in the form of a summer grant to a graduate student of his choice. He will be presented with a commemorative plaque at a ceremony on Thursday, April 13, 4:00-6:00 p.m. at Anna Head Alumnae Hall.

The Carol D. Soc Distinguished Graduate Student Mentoring Awards are administered by the Graduate Division in collaboration with the Graduate Council of the Academic Senate, funded by a generous bequest from the estate of Carol Soc, a former employee of the Graduate Division.
