I am currently writing a manuscript that explores the causes and consequences of a destructive series of epidemics that struck Brazil during the second half of the 1800s. Beyond transforming this nation in important ways, I am broadly interested in the shifting relationships between people, microbes and vectors in history. I try not to put culture or nature first, and in fact labor to bridge this divide. I also have two "side projects": 1) a history of pardos and race in Brazil and 2) automating meta-search engines ("bots") with Python and other programs so as to facilitate digital research.
