Mark Emerson is a Visiting Associate Professor. He has published on numerous aspects of early modern Atlantic societies from millenarian movements in Portugal and Brazil to inquisitorial attitudes towards female same-sex intimacy. He is currently engaged in writing two biographies on popular female mystics/visionaries in the seventeenth-century Atlantic world and has a long-term project on active resistance to the Inquisitions in Europe and the New World, 1500-1821.
