Dear friends,

I am saddened to share the news that Charles G. Sellers, a long-time member of our Department, passed away September 23, at the age of ninety-eight.

Charlie was a true giant in nineteenth-century American history. He joined our faculty in 1958 and remained with the Department until his retirement in 1990. His stature in the field is compellingly portrayed in the obituary that appeared today in the New York Times. I warmly recommend it. The History Department will post a full obituary on our website and in our newsletter.

Charlie's wife is our colleague Carolyn Merchant, Professor of the Graduate School in the Department of Environmental Science, Policy, and Management. Our thoughts are with Carolyn and the family at this difficult time.

Best,
Cathryn Carson
