I write about the history of female friendship around 1900, combining theoretical perspectives with a microhistorical case study on the intellectual, author and psychoanalyst Lou Andreas- Salomé (1861-1937). At Berkeley, I am planning to explore Andreas-Salomés relationship to Anna Freud. The two women wrote more than 400 letters to each other in nearly 20 years. Apart from being an intriguing document of friendship, their correspondence is also a piece of the history of psychoanalysis and its female protagonists.
