Religious Mission in the Secularized West: Jewish and Christian Perspectives.

My post-doctoral research focuses on religious "mission" to the secularized world, as manifested in two prominent contemporary missionary projects: the Catholic "New Evangelization", aimed at the re-Christianization of baptized populations who have lost their faith; and Chabad Hassidism's missionary project, aimed at fostering Jewish religious observance and Torah knowledge among secular Jews. Both missionary projects reflect far-reaching transformations in the self-perception of the Jewish-Orthodox and Catholic communities and in the way in which they approach the outside world, thus offering a unique perspective on the dynamic role of religion in contemporary Western society.
