Violet Soen is Associate Professor Early Modern History at the University of Leuven, Belgium and series editor of Habsburg Worlds at Brepols Publishers. She has published widely about the political and religious history of the Low Countries, the Spanish monarchy and France, and is interested in doing and coordinating research in transregional history. Once in Berkeley, she will teach a course on the history of the Netherlands, focusing on the questions of barriers and borders in the integration and disintegration of the region along the North Sea, today the Benelux (Belgium, The Netherlands and Luxemburg). She will also be working on her fourth book project on transregional noble networks between the Low Countries and France, operating along and across boundaries. Earlier, she has published monographs about the practice of history (Leuven University Press, 2016), peace attempts during the Dutch Revolt (Amsterdam University Press, 2012, also in open access) and the inquisition in the early modern Low Countries (Royal Academy of Belgium, 2007). Additional information on publications and research can be found on her website: and
