John Klopotowski is a doctoral student interested in the economic and political pressures facing minority-operated periodicals in the late Ottoman Empire and early Turkish Republic. His work asks how print capitalism shaped the rise and collapse of minority-language periodicals, complicating accounts that attribute the press's homogenization primarily to political censorship. He previously earned a master’s degree from Berkeley’s Graduate School of Journalism, where his research focused on minority press freedom in Istanbul and the city’s last remaining Armenian-Turkish newspaper, Agos. His writing has appeared in Liberties Journal, Mondoweiss, and New Lines Magazine, among other outlets. His research languages include Turkish, Arabic, and Armenian.
