History-Social Science Project

The UC Berkeley History Social-Science Project seeks to bridge the academy and K-12 communities to help elementary and secondary teachers provide equitable educational opportunities to all students, through a model of learning, practicing, and doing. UCBHSSP is committed to increasing the academic achievement of primary and secondary aged students by strengthening history content knowledge, academic literacy, and discipline-specific thinking skills. UCBHSSP's work with teachers is informed by current scholarship, engages communities of teachers, and fosters collaboration between K-12 teachers and the university.

UC Berkeley Oral History Center (OHC)

Oral History Center

Oral history dates to the beginnings of the University of California. Hubert Howe Bancroft conducted interviews in the 1860s in support of his 39-volume history of the West. In 1954, the Regional Oral History Office was established to conduct interviews with leading citizens of the West. In 2014 we became the Oral History Center of The Bancroft Library. Over the decades, we have conducted 4,000 interviews on almost every topic imaginable. The vast majority of these interviews have been transcribed and made available online.

Social Science Matrix

Social Science Matrix is UC Berkeley's new flagship institute for social science research. Our purpose is captured in our name: we provide an organizational framework—a "matrix"—that supports cross-disciplinary projects pursued by more than 500 social scientists across the Berkeley campus research landscape and beyond. With Matrix as a catalyst, UC Berkeley social scientists have unique potential to generate effective solutions to global challenges like mobility, behavior change, social resilience, and governance.

Doreen B. Townsend Center for the Humanities

Towsend Center for the Humanities

Since its establishment in 1987, the Doreen B. Townsend Center for the Humanities has encouraged an interdisciplinary approach to scholarship, fostered innovative research, and promoted intellectual conversation across academic fields. Unlike a number of other university humanities centers, which devote a large percentage of their resources to hosting residential scholars from other institutions, the Townsend Center is committed to enriching the existing wealth of intellectual resources at Berkeley.

The Center offers an array of fellowship and grant programs designed to support research and scholarship at all levels of the university community. We also fund more than 70 interdisciplinary working groups on a wide range of topics — ranging from Tourism Studies, to Feminist Anthropologies, to the Folklore Roundtable — and cosponsor a wide variety of lectures and conferences with other departments and units on campus.
