400 Years of Resistance to Slavery and Injustice

August 19, 2019

On August 30th, to mark the 400th anniversary of the beginning of slavery in North America, UC Berkeley will host an initiative throughout the 2019-2020 academic school year, called "400 Years of Resistance to Slavery and Injustice".

The mission of the initiative is to "organiz[e] a series of events that include speaking engagements, film showings and art performances that honor and celebrate the extraordinary intellectual, social, and cultural contributions of African Americans to our nation; examine the long-lasting impacts of slavery; and explore the roots and consequences of continued discrimination, bias, and inequality in our society."

The first event of this series is a daylong Symposium on August 30th, featuring prominent national scholars, including History Department faculty Waldo Martin and Stephanie Jones-Rogers.
